American Traditions Competition - Quarterfinals

  • Skidaway Island United Methodist Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

I'm returning to the American Traditions Competition as a quarterfinalist. I'll travel to Savannah, Georgia in February, where the quarterfinalists will sing three songs in three genres chosen from a provided list. All selections must be by American composers and songwriters. If we move on to the next two rounds, we sing three new songs in each for a total of nine different songs in nine different genres throughout the competition.

My quintet is opening for the legendary Bob Thompson at Peoples Bank Theatre on August 20. Grab your tickets and share the event!

SOLD OUT: Stage Door Cabaret at Peoples Bank Theatre

My quintet will perform as part of the newly restored People's Bank Theatre Stage Door Cabaret series. The event will take place entirely on the stage with table seating, wine, and light hors d'oeuvres.

An evening with the JBQ is a jazz-influenced homage to the many genres I enjoy, including originals and arrangements of songs from artists like Björk, Weezer, Bach, Samuel Barber, and more. Here's a taste of our sound:

Jess Baldwin Quintet in the Evergreen A&H Series

I'll present an afternoon of my favorite music with Andy Hall, Steven Heffner, Ryan Kennedy, and Sean Parsons as part of the Evergreen Arts and Humanities Series at Washington State Community College.

Contact Tanya Wilder at 740-885-5687 / twilder@wscc.edu for seat pass reservations.

About the band:

Andy Hall honed his drumming chops through five summers with the award-winning Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, serving as drum captain from 1988-1990. He founded Groove Project, a West African drum and dance ensemble, which received the Artsbridge Founder's Award.  Andy has played with many groups in his native Mid-Ohio Valley including Maybelogic, Pole, Mokshya, Funk Pump, Vinnie Mele and the Lubricators, and Waterwagon. By day, he's the Senior Interactive Designer at Stonewall Retail Marketing in Marietta, Ohio.

Bassist Steven Heffner is a seasoned educator and performer having performed with many great artists including Todd DelGuidice, Rob Tapper, Joe Kloess and Arnie Coruthers as well as names such as Arthur Duncan, Hal Galper, Sid Jacobs, Jeff Clayton, and Bill Watrous throughout the Inland Northwest. After leaving Washington for Athens, Ohio, Steven had the privilege of working with great regional artists like Erik Augis, Jay Flippin, Rob Parton, Bob Thompson, Matt James, Ernie Bastin, and Guy Remonko as well as performers like Mark Pender, Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg, and Landau Murphy Jr.

Guitarist Ryan Kennedy is a musician in Charleston, WV. He plays guitar with the Bob Thompson Unit, the Ryan Kennedy Trio, and the Mountain Stage band. He recently finished his first album, titled "Something to Say."

Sean Parsons is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Originally from Illinois, Sean holds a Bachelor’s degree in music composition from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master’s degree in jazz studies from DePaul University, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois. Sean currently lives in Athens, Ohio where he is an Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Music Theory.

Jess Baldwin Quartet

The Jess Baldwin Quartet (feat. Andy Hall, Steve Heffner, and Ryan Kennedy) will present an evening of originals and unique covers at the beautiful Adelphia Music Hall in Marietta, Ohio. $7 in advance or at the door. Ages 21+ only. Click here for the Facebook event page. RSVP. Then share it.

Here's a sample of what you'll hear, recorded at our last Adelphia gig, July 2013:

House restaurant The Galley has some great dishes if you want to make an evening of it. My favorites are the veggie burger and the Pad Thai. If you like beer, they have a state-of-the-art individualized cooling system for their many taps. Personally, I love the Founder's Breakfast Stout. There's also the boutique-style Hackett Hotel above The Galley if you're coming from out-of-town.

Can't wait to see you there!
