The opportunities listed do not include school- or church-based performing groups, as it is assumed readers are already aware of their school/church's performing ensembles. Royal Conservatory Music Development Program Assessments

We have a performance (practical) assessment center in Athens, OH. Assessments are in late May/early June and November. Assessments include performance, technique, ear-training, scales and chords, and sight-reading in many different instruments, including piano and voice. Higher levels (5 and up) of the program include a written portion. 

Parkersburg WTAP Homecoming Talent Show

Ages 6 and up. Applications are generally due in mid-August. 

Solo & Ensemble

Solo & Ensemble is a performance opportunity for soloists as well as small groups of two or more on instruments and voice. Ratings and comments are given by judges. It is available in both Ohio and WV. It is generally in January in WV for grades 4-12, Jan-Feb in Ohio for high schoolers, and April for middle schoolers in Ohio.

Choirs

Marietta Children's Chorus

In residence at Marietta College. For children in grades 4-6. Annual tuition is $175. Click the link above for more info.

Smoot Theatre Children's Chorus

For students currently in third through fifth grades. There is currently no cost for membership in the choir. More information may be obtained by calling Barbara Full at 304-422-5346 or e-mailing fullhouse@suddenlink.net or calling the Smoot at 304-422-7529 (PLAY). Rehearsals are at the Smoot Theatre in Parkersburg, WV. 

WV All-State Children's Chorus

For children in 5th and 6th grades. Children (including homeschoolers) must regularly participate in a school choir (community choirs do not count) in order to be eligible for this chorus, and must be accompanied to the WVMEA conference (during which the choir performs) by their teacher, who must be a member of WVMEA. The WVMEA Conference is usually in March.  

Ohio All-State Children's Chorus

For children in 4th and 5th grades. Performance usually in January. Application and audition tape usually due June 1.

Musical Theatre

Guild Builders

Guild Builders is the Actors Guild of Parkersburg's youth theatre program, offered at no cost to fourth through ninth graders in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Participants meet on Saturday mornings October - March from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Actors Guild, located at the corner of Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg. Each week students receive instruction in the performing arts. At the end of the program, students are part of a production for which the entire cast and crew are comprised of Guild Builders students.

Missoula Children's Theatre at the Smoot Theatre

The Missoula Children's Theatre program is a touring program that gives local children a chance to learn and perform a show in one week, complete with pre-made costumes and scenery. Auditions are generally on Monday afternoon with rehearsals starting immediately after and performances on Saturday. It usually comes through in March or April. The shows are always great.

Jessica Baldwin Studio Recitals

I host a Fall Recital and a Spring Recital each year for my school-aged students. It's a more formal event that lets students perform classical and musical theatre repertoire in a setting appropriate to the genres. It's always at First Presbyterian Church in Parkersburg.

Coffeehouse Hootenanny

I also host a Fall and Spring Coffeehouse Hootenanny each year for my school-aged students. It's a very casual event that lets students perform pop, rock, indie, and other CCM music in a setting appropriate to the genres. It's always at Jeremiah's Coffeehouse in Marietta.

Marietta College Junior Fine Arts Recitals

There is generally one in November, February, and May each school year. Participants are selected by each piano teacher. Each student plays once piece. Memorization is required. Certificates received at each recital will be honored as a small scholarship if the student attends Marietta College.

Interlochen is one of the most highly-respected arts programs in the world. In addition to summer camps, they have an arts boarding high school. Multi-week summer programs include Music Composition, Piano, Vocal Artist, Jazz, Audio Recording, Rock Music, and Singer-Songwriter. 

School of Rock Camps

The School of Rock is a national program that features week-long camps. The closest locations are near Cleveland (StrongsvilleRocky River, and Highland Heights) and Cincinnati (Mason).

Smoot Theatre's Camp Vaudeville

This Parkersburg musical theatre performance program is for elementary and middle schoolers. It generally runs in July and August.

NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Auditions

These are for singers only and include both a classical and musical theatre category with 3-4 songs required in each category. Auditions are available on the state and regional levels. The auditions include singers ages high school through adult, with a different age category each for high schoolers, college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, grad students, and adult students. The audition day concludes with a recital featuring the winners in each category, who are also given a small monetary prize. Ohio auditions are in the Spring, WV in the fall.

Parkersburg WTAP Homecoming Talent Show

Ages 6 and up. Applications are generally due in mid-August.

Hosted by the Charleston Town Center. Usually happens in April.

Usually in June, applications due round April. For high school and college students. Each year's theme is different.

Choirs

Marietta College Oratorio Chorus

The Oratorio Chorus performs major choral/orchestral works each semester and is open to both Marietta College students and members of the community. No audition is required. Rehearsals are held every Monday evening beginning in September from 7:30 to 9:30. Its annual performance of Messiah is as old as the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and boast a standing room only attendance each year of over 1200 people.

Marietta College Women's Chorus

Ohio All-State Choir

Sponsored by OMEA. Students audition on an individual basis via recording. Recordings generally due June 1. Conference typically in January.

WV All-State Chamber Choir

This is WV's most select high school chorus, sponsored by WVACDA. Students audition on an individual basis in person. The audition includes singing the pieces, sight-reading, and tonal memory. Auditions are typically in November. The performance is typically in January.
